Improvisation, Improv for short, is the perfect way to work on character development, trusting your intuition, and for me, thinking on my feet for commercial and theatrical auditions here in Los Angeles.
I just completed a 5-Week Improv Training Session with instructor, Tim Simek, of Slow...Children at Play comedy improv company here in Los Angeles, Ca. He taught our particular class at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Ca. Tim is not only the founder of this improv company, but also an improv group member, actor, and director. He believes that "we're really all just kids who want to go out and play."
About My Class Experience
The class always started out with a nice meditative, breathing, warm-up, with our eyes closed. Then we would go into a visualization or improv exercises and games that included: scene set up and development, space work, character exploration, listening and concentration work, and trust exercises. During the exercises and games, I was always cracking up!
I learned even more about myself and how I could extend myself beyond my personal limits while in this class. I worked with other classmates, who had attended the class before, retired from full-time careers, those who needed a stress reliever, or wanted to understand the methods of an actor when building a character for film projects.
Although I had taken a number of improv classes during my studies at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Hollywood, I felt that it was time to get back into a learning environment to challenge myself. During the last day of class, Tim invited some of his improv group members to attend the class with us and we all did improv games and scenes together. It was beyond entertaining! I was challenged with creating characters off the top of my head during the improv scenes. That was fun and I even surprised myself! I noticed that I had grown, in trusting myself, and letting go, while actually letting my inner-child roam free. I left satisfied and filled with so much extra, positive, energy.
That's what Improvisation will do to you! Mission Completed!
